A solid romantic comedy

A solid romantic comedy, firing on almost all cylinders. Formulaic but charming. Very “Bridget Jones” - flawed but likable heroine keeps stepping in it until she finally gets it right. International buyers shouldn’t fear the ‘comedy’ part of this romantic comedy - more than half the humor here is visual/physical, and Renee Zellweger is totally up for it, body and soul. Audiences who don’t know a lick of English will have no trouble finding much to laugh at. The characters are interesting (enough), and Monica, even on the page, is really appealing. The general tone stresses comedy over romance. Overall, CHILLED IN MIAMI has a stupid title, but the script itself delivers 100% on its premise and offers Rene Zellweger another chance to shine as a romantic actress and outstanding comedienne.

Well-written, genuinely funny. It’s funny for the 13 year old crowd (guns going off and bad perms and pee jokes) but it’s even funnier for the 20-somethings, because what can be funnier than honest, embarrassing mishaps in front of the person you’re trying to impress most? The formula worked in “Bridget Jones” and it will work here, partly because the writing is fresh and smart, and partly because Monica is Renee Zellweger at her comedy best.

The pace is good, the context unique, the tone confident, and the humor well-written and evenly spaced. The characters are stereotyped, but in a realistic and affectionate, not nasty, tone.
